Leave GMA alone, you faggots

(cross-posted at PEX. I know, I know, but I couldn't just sit)

You anti-GMA people are too idealistic but hopelessly unrealistic. The problem with you is that you think democracy is the be-all and end-all of everything. However, that's not the case. Yes, it's great to harp about freedom and honesty, but why are the values there in the first place? No, not because mother nature said it so, but because it's for the good of the citizens. (i.e.,so that there will be no prevalent backstabbing, abuse or what have you)

So, you see, values are MERELY derived; they are not absolute truths. The primary basis is whether this certain action would promote the good of the people (and not unjustly hurt others who are involved). Though these two are usually hand-in-hand, they are still distinct from each other; VALUES ARE SECONDARY.

Now, we have a dilemma: should we choose economic advancement and stability (hey, we have the peso faring well well well two weeks ago) or should we still cling on the value of honesty? Should we allow a dishonest (fuck. who isn't? frigging hypocrites) yet effective leader to govern our country or should we not, because our rights are so precious and that it doesn't even matter if the whole country is hopelessly falling apart (you ask me why? BECAUSE WE HAVE THE RIGHT!)? In short, should we choose something that would benefit the country more or our values?

Given my argument above, we should, of course, choose the former.

People would object: but what message would we send to the future generations? Well, it's definitely not that it's all right to cheat just to get whatever one wants (though it may be interpreted that way). We're telling them that it's all right to sacrifice (the anyway arbitrary) values for the good of the people. We're telling them that what comes first is the welfare of others, and not some concept that is falsely perceived to be sacred. (Actually, if everyone would think this way, then the world would be much much happier place. :p)

So, be realistic, everyone. Values are relative; don't cling to it desperately.

(notes:
1. I know there isn't any clear-cut definition to "what is good for the people", but heck, we can approximate. We are looking for generalities here, not laws.)

GMA til 2010!
